Manchester-based animation and visual effects studio Mi has delved into its creative past to bring back a character for a new film showcasing The Sharp Project

Mi has staged a comeback for ahd168, the studio’s iconic android. The character first appeared over two years ago, as a down-and-out robot on the streets of Manchester.

The original film, which immediately went viral, was a mix of live action and CGI. However, this time, the film is entirely digital.

The purpose of the film, is to showcase The Sharp Project, an office complex for creatives currently under development.

Digital plans

Mi used the architect’s actual digital plans to visualise the project before giving ahd168 a full makeover to bring the robot in line with today’s technology (2 years is, after all, a long time in the digital world).

Interestingly, Mi chose not to use motion capture data to animate the robot, using an animator instead to painstakingly animate every move.

The result is a 1 minute, 53 second-long film, which shows ahd168′s full rehabilitation into society. Check out the video above, and then visit Mi’s website for more great work.
