Deathly Hallows part 2 previews and King Kong 3D for FMX 2011

FMX 2011 has unveiled details of its schedule, including a focus on Weta Digital’s ride ‘King Kong 360-3D’, and some new previews of scenes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

With just one month to go, programming information for FMX 2011, the 16th conference on animation, effects, games and interactive media has been released.

All the hits in the entertainment industry over the past year find themselves in the spotlight during the four days in Stuttgart, including King Kong 360-3D, a tribute to Harry Potter and a focus on Rango: 3D World’s cover star for issue 141.

Weta Digital to present ‘King Kong 360-3D’

Chief technology officer Sebastian Sylwan discusses the unique design challenges of working on the attraction, based at Universal Studios in Hollywood.

The project required tight collaboration with director Peter Jackson, as well as utilising technical advancements that Weta had developed while working on James Cameron’s Avatar.

Harry Potter tribute

To honour the completion of the series, there will be presentations and panels hosted by Chris deFaria, executive vice president, digital production, animation and visual effects, for Warner Bros.

The focus will be on the franchise’s impact on global VFX production and the evolution of technology over the film series’ 10-year lifespan.

New sequences from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 will also be shown ahead of its July 2011 release

Rango

VFX supervisor Tim Alexanda and CG supervisor Partrick Cohen from ILM will be presenting a production focus on the studio’s first animated feature, Rango.

Pixomondo to present Sucker Punch and Fast Five

The VFX studio will present its work on these two upcoming films.

‘Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible’

A new documentary focusing on ILM’s iconic 35-year history will be screened at FMX,  exploring the studio’s pioneering films and VFX technology.

The documentary includes interviews with George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Jon Favreau, Robin Williams, JJ Abrams and ILM’s top visual effects supervisors and artists.

Also at FMX 2011

The conference also presents a history of 3D according to variety magazine, an Interactive Content Creation (ICC) track, a Visual Effects Society-hosted forum on global production, a talk on the current status and future of open source software from Dan Candela, director of technology at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

There will also be a focus on French and Chinese animation, and finally, a presentation on Stuttgart’s cluster of animation studios and special effects houses.
