Gimbal explained in Escape’s free Maya tutorial
Escape Studios has released it’s latest free tutorial in which VFX tutor Lee Danskin covers Gimbal and rotation order, explaining what it is, what causes it, and the issues it has within animations
In the tutorial, Danskin aims to tackle some technical issues that affect CG artists daily.
“I’ll intentionally ‘break’ Maya’s maths so that you can begin to understand the effect of using Euler based algorithms over Quaternion,” he writes in a blog about the Gimbal tutorial on the Escape Studios website.
The tutorial concludes by showing how to group and use the Rotation Order options in the DAG node in an initial scene and a simple biped rig.
Over the 11 minute video tutorial, Danskin covers Gimbal, Euler and Quaternion maths, Grouping and Rotation order.
