VFX studio Weta has announced that it will be adding deep colour compositing to the OpenEXR format later in the year

Weta's announcement was made during the Open Source track at FMX

During the Open Source track at this year’s FMX, which also includes talks by Disney Animation, Autodesk and Pixar, Weta has announced that it will be adding deep colour compositing to the OpenEXR format.

Weta’s Sebastian Sylwan led the discussion during the effects studio’s half-hour timeslot and demonstrated with an example that showed two layers with multiple coloured discs which, when composited together are interleaved.

The result is reducing the amount of different layers needed for complex composites. “The files can get large, but you get a huge advantage in computing time when compositing,” said Sylwan.

Deep image compositing is a recently emerged method for compositing and rendering images, in which a perception of depth is created allowing multiple samples of the image to make up the final colour.

Deep imaging has already been integrated into Houdini and is otherwise used at a range of large effects houses. Weta hopes to fold its own feature set into OpenEXR later in the year, and will most likely be seen at SIGGRAPH 2011 in August.
