Skillset handbook sets benchmark for VFX education
A new industry-authored guide aims to make CG students more employable with best-practice advice in VFX training and education
Skillset is the Sector Skills Council for creative media and is responsible for 60 per cent of the UK creative industries. It has recently launched a handbook that has been designed to improve the quality of VFX talent emerging from UK universities.
The Core Skills of VFX draws on the knowledge and advice of more than 60 of the UK’s top VFX professionals at many leading British companies. It will be provided to universities and colleges across the country free of charge, and aims to give tutors the in-depth guidance needed for the next generation of VFX artists. The comprehensive, modular guide will allow institutes to add specific elements into current programmes, or use it to create brand new industry-focused degree courses. The VFX Core Skills Student Primer is a section dedicated to students and provides details on core skills the industry needs - covering technical elements, teamwork and meeting the client brief.
Skillset’s lead on VFX projects, Saint John Walker comments, “By presenting the advice of industry in a form that universities can either embed directly into their current courses or use to create new courses, we will significantly reduce the time it takes to get quality courses off the ground.
“The industry has asked us to change the landscape of VFX tuition, and there’s no time to waste. This industry-authored handbook will set the scene and pace for a new generation of home grown talent.”
