Zeus’s CG Temple imagined in new Scion spot
Brewster Parsons has created Zeus’s temple and his legendary lighting bolt in this brightly coloured spot for the Scion tC automobile
The fake beard maybe a little off-putting, but then Brewster Parsons weren’t in charge of wardrobe…
Instead, the team, headed up by VFX supervisor Andrew Eksner, created a great CG backdrop and lighting bolt effect for the new 30-second spot, ‘High Voltage’.
The live-action footage was captured on green screen before Eksner digitally created an iconic Mount Olympus environment, without undermining the tongue-in-cheek tone of the commercial.
A keen traveller and photographer, the VFX supervisor used his own library of photos of places such as Patagonia and Polynesia to illuminate the skies.
Eksner then added additional elements: “We had to experiment a lot just to find the perfect balance of clouds, fog and sunbeams peeking through, which would evoke that dramatic feeling of the gods without going overboard and upstaging the cars,” he says.
Once the environment was completed, the focus switched to Zeus’s lighting bolt, which was required to look realistic enough to be held in the hand, while still containing all the energy and electricity need to comically transform the Scion vehicle with just a zap.
