Computer Animation Festival winners announced at SIGGRAPH 2011

The winners of the annual Computer Animation Festival have been announced at the SIGGRAPH 2011 conference in Vancouver

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore has won the Best In Show Awards at The Computer Animation Festival. Source: William Joyce, Brandon Oldenburg & ACM SIGGRAPH 2011

The jury has reviewed the 77 films to be shown in The Computer Animation Festival at SIGGRAPH 2011 and has selected its winners.

In total there were 891 submissions from 44 separate countries.

Computer Animation Festival winners:

Best In Show Award
The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore
Directed by William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg, Moonbot Studios

The directors used a range of techniques including miniatures, computer animation and 2D animation to create a humourous and poignant tale.

Jury Award
Paths of Hate
Directed by Damian Nenow, Platige Image

Two pilots chase each other through the air, driven by hate, their planes write expressive messages into the skies.

Best Student Project Prize
Flamingo Pride
Directed by Tomer Eshed, The Konrad Wolf Potsdam-Babelsberg Film and Television University

The film’s protaganist is the only straight flamingo in a gay flock, he falls in love with a lady stork and has to make a bold move to prove his intentions. Director Tomer Eshed was also behind the 3D World favourite Our Wonderful Nature.

Escape of the Gingerbread Man!!!
Directed by Tod Polson, The Monk Studios

The Experience of Fliehkfraft
Directed by Till Nowak, frameboX

Best Student Project Prize Runners-up

DreamGiver
Directed by Tyler Carter, Brigham Young University

Sweater Dog
Directed by Gina Moffit, Ringling College of Art and Design

“The submissions selected to be featured at SIGGRAPH 2011 are a true testament to the leaps and bounds the COmputer Animation industry has achieved since the Computer Animation Festival first debut at SIGGRAPH and promises a very exciting road ahead,” says Joshua Grow, Computer Animation Festival director and 3D stereo coordinator for The Creative-Cartel.

Awards screenings

The films will be shown during two sessions at SIGGRAPH 2011:

Wednesday, 10 August, 12.45-1.30pm, West Building, Exhibit Hall A
Thursday, 11 August, 9.15-10am, West Building, Exhibit Hall A
