Infinite skills - the company that provide high quality training DVDs for creative professionals – have recently released this extensive course on Maya 2012.
Introduced by experienced author and modeller Lee Lainer, the training covers many Maya tools and techniques in a clear and concise manner.
Maya is by no means easy to learn; it has menus within menus and options galore, all of which can seem very intimidating to beginners. However, this DVD eases the user in gently so that even the most inexperienced artists shouldn’t be put off by Maya’s mammoth capabilities.
Smooth Workflow
The learning is broken down into 15 chapters, all of which have clearly titled sub-headers within. Each chapter builds on the previous one for a smooth workflow, but users can also jump to a different area of learning at any time using the menu.
Each section breaks down the tools and techniques into simple steps and Lainer uses clear visual examples to demonstrate them, which is very effective.
Training covers everything from the Maya interface, how to use and position cameras, modelling NURBS and polygons right through to texturing, lighting, and rendering your objects.
The DVD also covers a wealth of other subjects including animation, bump mapping, using mental ray and projecting 2D maps.
User Interface
The training interface is very easy to use, though a minor bug bear is the menu window on the left-hand side which seems to have a mind of its own. It appears with even the slightest move of the mouse and covers a large portion of the screen.
The DVD is accompanied by working files, which are clearly organised and labelled on the disc, so that users can study alongside the instructor.
Like with any new software, practice makes perfect, but this training DVD provides an excellent starting point for what some artists may find an intimidating 3D package to approach.
With nearly 13 hours of training, this DVD is all you need to get started on your own Maya projects and at just over £60 it’s an absolute bargain!
