BIGSMACK’s 3D animation for George Bush’s 9/11 interview
Animation studio BIGSMACK has rendered the moment just before the first plane struck the World Trade Center in photo-real 3D animation for a new National Geographic special
The special, titled George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview, airs 28 August and the work is featured briefly in the show’s promo.
The spot opens with a shot of the nose of the plane barely touching one of the towers.
BIGSMACK built photo-real 3D models of the Twin Towers façade and planes in Maya.
The studio also gave some iconic photographs of the former president from the aftermath of the attacks the 2.5D treatment, giving them further impact.
“We wanted this promo to stand out and make an impact, but we also felt an obligation to be respectful and not exploit an event that is emotional for all Americans. Finding that balance between something that is impactful, yet respectful, was a big challenge for us, and I think we accomplished that,” says creative director Andy Hann.
