Architect Jason Spiliotakos creates 3D backdrops for fashion designer’s new catalogue

Architect Jason Spiliotakos’s most recent project was to create 3D backdrops for the new catalogue of fashion designer Alexis Barrell. “I showed Alexis some 3D work and proposed the idea of creating an entirely CGI backdrop for one of her collections,” Spiliotakos explains. “As we discussed it, we both became very excited about the possibilities and so embarked on it.”

The theme of Barrell’s new clothes collection is ‘From Naples with Love’ and was the starting point for this project. “Inspired by the city of Naples, we researched old photos to give us a mood,” says Spiliotakos. ”

“Together we decided that the project would require a slightly surreal approach to stand out, so we decided to incorporate a modern touch to it by introducing the girl’s 1950′s-inspired apartment into the buildings in the old images. This is where 3D is such good fun because you can start merging together these different eras and come up with fun results.”

After establishing a basic element layout, Spiliotakos began modelling the assets in detail in 3ds Max. ”When the modelling was finished we set up the views and did the model photo shoot against a green screen,” he says.

“Next was all the texturing which required a fair amount of photography to collect the amount of information required to assemble the final materials. I should give a special mention of Thomas Luft’s Ivy Generator which I used for the ivy - it’s great.”

The architect also used 2D software to finalise the detailed textures. “Photoshop was used extensively in this project for creating the textures,” he comments. ”They required a great amount of work, as I had to go around Athens trying to find any derelict building and photograph it.”

“It’s amazing how many reference photographs you can use in a single texture. I think the most challenging part was the texturing. It was not technically challenging but there was just so much of it.”
