Find out how 3D artist Shi Yao created these stunning 3D visualisations using 3ds Max, V-Ray and Photoshop

Check out these two gorgeous 3D scenes by Art Director Shi Yao. Just Another Dusk is based on the scene of an earlier piece of work called An Afternoon.

Both scenes show true flare and uniqueness, and the texturing is astounding.

Architectural visualisation is a subject that many people just don’t find engaging: As one CG Society blogger posted under ‘Why 3D arch-viz is not so well recieved’: “People are more drawn to look at something unusual than something that they can see when they walk down the street,”…

But you should take a look around as there’s some amazing art to be seen in this field.

Here the simple representation of a town has been imbued with a broken personality. It feels very old and lonely – which is what the artist was trying to convey.

Cool 3D arch-viz: Just Another Dusk and An Afternoon

Just Another Dusk was based on a previous visualisation called An Afternoon

Shi Yao used 3ds Max for modelling, V-Ray for texturing, lighting and rendering, and Photoshop for compositing. He worked for hundreds of hours on both these images using simple techniques and a few displacements.

He was heavily inspired by movies, in particular, True Grit (2010), and the game Fallout 3.

“My favourite films are Avatar and The Lord of the Rings.

In his spare time, Shi likes to play RPGs like Fallout and watch Western movies.

“I love their atmosphere: old, sad, deserted… it let me have the urge to step into frame,” says Shi.

“To walk in the street, to touch the fences, to hear the sound of the wind, to feel the warm sunshine and the town’s emotion …”

“So, I want to create such a scene to express my feelings.”

The texturing in An Afternoon is absolutely amazing. You can almost feel the roughness of the fence posts and the dry rust on the car

We love the depth and detail, and composition of both these scenes. The lighting is excellent and texturing has been masterfully done, with cool little touches everywhere you look – great, rusty trike! The images really draw you in. Well done!
