“I’m a freelance animator and creative designer. In the main I do VFX in clips and advertisements. I can work with particles, but I have extensive experience in other areas such as modelling, rigging, texturing, animation, tracking, and so on.
“I’m inspired by anything beautiful, especially old, rusty, shabby things. This image took about a week to create. I particularly enjoyed modelling the cog wheels inside the chameleon, but they’re hardly visible.”

“I work in a news agency as a graphic artist, and I also do digital art and other types of art. Most of my works are personal. This image took me a week to complete, working part time.
“It’s a combination of 3D and 2D – I love to do overpainting in my work, and in this image I composed some textures and paintings in Photoshop with my light pen. For the more artistic effects I used the Paint Deform tool.
“I completed the lighting in Photoshop using two Overlay and Vivid Light layers to make the effects really pop. For me, the most enjoyable part of this project was modelling the kid’s hands, legs and hair.
“In my art I want to express universal ideas like love and birth, because everyone has experienced these things, and that allows me to connect with my audience.”

“I’m a freelance CG character artist – I recently created CG illustrations for a children’s book – and I really like to see other artists’ illustrations, photographs, animations and films. That’s mostly what inspires me in my work.
“I modelled this character a few months ago, and at the time I only had the design, but no ideas for background scenes. So I kept the model for a while and started looking for some reference; I knew that I wanted to go for a sweet pin-up style, so I looked at illustrations from artists such as Erich Sokol, Andrew Hickinbottom and Irina Davis for inspiration. After that, everything went pretty fast: it only took about a week to finish the image.”

“I work in the CG industry as a renderer, and have three years’ experience as a 3D artist. It’s an amazing job – I get to use interesting software to create wonderful, virtual worlds.
“I spent about a week working on this image. I enjoy adjusting lights and tones, and I really like tweaking and playing with the various parameters to create new effects.
“For rendering, I separated as many passes as possible so that they could easily be adjusted for compositing to make the final image harmonious.
“I found that using the Deex Shaders pack for mental ray was really good for improving efficiency.”

“I just recently finished this image, which I’ve been working on for three months in my spare time. It’s called ‘La Habana’ – the Spanish name of the Cuban capital Havana – and I wanted to create a Havana-style interior, with an emphasis on the feel of comfort despite the run-down condition of the environment.
“I collected a lot of reference material – something I find essential, especially in the modelling stage. If I can’t find exactly what I’m looking for I often combine elements that I like. For example, the fridge is actually three fridge images thrown together.
“My favourite part of this project was lighting the scene and setting the mood. I like interior images with a strong, direct light source. I wanted hard sunlight in my scene, which in contrast produces soft, bounced light; I used white bounce cards to lighten areas that were too dark. The shoes needed an extra light to make them more noticeable.
“I think it’s important that every image tells a story; it should make the viewers use their imagination. I get inspired by a lot of things, but for me music is the most valuable source – no other art form can compete with music when it comes to evoking a certain mood. When I know how a picture should ‘feel’ I start to look for inspiration in visual art. That could be anything from classic paintings or photography to works by other 3D artists.”

“I work as a freelance 3D artist for the games industry, and I’m inspired by games, movies, and the work of other artists.
“This image took me about ten days to create; I enjoyed the whole process, but particularly the texturing. Most of the work involved was just standard modelling, but the detail of the armour was created using displacement maps.”
