Take a closer look at this amazing trailer for one of the biggest games of 2012

Jaws dropped around the world when EA Games and Bioware released this awesome trailer for one of the most hotly anticipated games of 2012 – Mass Effect 3. The brief was first presented to the LA office of creative production company The Mill, but due to overwhelming work on the Super Bowl it was passed over to the TV and film department, who jumped at the chance.

VFX supervisor Jean-Claude Deguara says: “The brief was to create a range of VFX starting from a basic enhancement of a sky in the first shot to the epic battle scene that involved full 2D and 3D environments, explosions, fires, CG creatures running around getting shot and CG spaceships destroying buildings in the background.”

To get this all done, The Mill’s experienced team used Maya, mental ray, Arnold, Mudbox, Softimage, RealFlow, and the Fracture plug-in for Maya. “We used Fracture, an advanced demolition and physics-based effect plug-in, developed by the Mill’s own Craig Davies,” says effects supervisor Nick Webber. “It allows us to do large-scale breaking and fracturing effects quickly and realistically. Prior to that there were no viable tools to do that kind of effect – it’s fast and reliable, and looks cool.”
