The A-Team goes nuts in this action-packed spot from LA and New York-based creative studio Psyop
The brief came about when the Psyop team was approached to create an ’80s action-movie montage for Planters Men’s Health Mix. The spot features Mr Peanut and his two friends, Mr Almond and Mr Pistachio, and the team brainstormed various scenarios, using television shows and films such as The Dukes of Hazzard, Kill Bill and James Bond as inspiration.
Psyop was responsible for everything from storyboarding through to rendering and final composition. The spot was full of effects, so the team needed to use an assortment of software to achieve the brief. Maya, Arnold, Nuke, 3ds Max, Krakatoa, Fume and RayFire all served a purpose on the project, but it was Arnold that proved to be particularly useful.
“This was only our second project using Arnold and I think we’ve fallen in love,” says creative director David Chontos. “Using Arnold lent the final product a beautiful, realistic quality that would’ve been far more difficult to achieve in any other render package.”
That said, the team also found 3ds Max and its various plug-ins vital to production. “From the wood splintering to the avalanche and planet explosion, all the FX work was done in 3ds Max using a variety of plug-ins,” says Chontos. “My favourite is the dust that Mr Pistachio kicks up while jump-roping; it’s so short but the fluid simulation and how it catches the light is just beautiful.”
