Created through advertising agency, Leo Burnett London, this spot highlights the devastating effects in South America caused by the use of cocaine.
When we first saw Cocaine Unwrapped The Machine, we were not only amazed by the strength of the message, but also the sheer scale of the project and the fantastic CG.
We caught up with director Tomek Bagiński and CG supervisor Grzegorz Kukuś to find out more about the spot:
“We had amazing brief from the agency, with tons of information about the cocaine in UK,” says Tomek Bagiński. “I suggested the idea to the agency, which is somewhat similar to the idea of my old short film, Fallen Art, and they loved it. We had then some discussions about the details and the project got the green light.”
The team used a simple combination of 3ds Max, Photoshop and After Effects to create the spot. “As we focused rather on artistic aspects of the spot so we could achieve it by any software,” says CG supervisor Grzegorz Kukuś.
“There wasn’t really any serious technical challenge in this project, more important was the creative work,” Kukuś continues. “We mainly wanted to focus on the climate of the story so we had to choose the right techniques.”
“We had a small team so it had to be a bit simplified. It turned out that using 2D graphics, camera mapping and focusing on the composition where we combined the rendered elements with visual effects shot in the camera, was very good combination.”
“We spend considerable amount of time focusing on concepts, matte painting and composition. The 3D – modeling, rigging and rendering – was relatively easy and it took around two weeks.”
“We have put a bit more emphasis on composition, but still we were able to finish it within three to four weeks. Final delivery was on 8th May 2012.”
