Watch this beautiful animated short made by students at Supinfocom. A gorgeous story, wonderfully realised with expert colouring…

It’s difficult to imagine that this animated short wasn’t created by experienced artists: and is in fact a graduation film created by four Supinfocom students in 2011.

The story, characters, direction, animation, lighting, colour etc are all fantastic. We don’t know what they’re putting in the water at Supinfocom, but it’s working!

A Fox Tale is inspired by a Chinese legend. “As in Chinese tales, the fox’s spirit who has nine tails has magic power to create illusions for instance,” Chao ma explains on his blog. “Nine tails are a challenge for animation because it has to be beautiful, magic with nice curves.”

The animation shows a battle between two hunters who are also brothers who end up figthing for the same woman.

To begin with Chao ma did a lot of drawings to find the visual aspect he wanted. He was joined by fellow students Thomas Bozovic, Alexandre Cazals and Julien Legay to realise the story in CG. The team used 3ds Max, Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

The colouring in A Fox Tale is one of the best we've seen in a student film and is reminiscent of Pixar's UP

“I didn’t want to just realise a fight movie. I choose the fox girl as an important character in the story,” says Chao ma on his blog. “She is very beautiful, clever with a very special sensuality. Her movments are graceful but she is also a fox. We also should see her animal side.”

We hope to bring you more on this short in an up-coming issue of 3D World.
