Imaginary Forces created a liquid world in which to promote Sony’s upcoming Playstation epic

This amazing liquid world is a cinematic trailer created to provide gamers with a sneak peek into the upcoming Sony PlayStation release God of War: Ascension. Game director Todd Papy asked LA-based creative studio Imaginary Forces to create a dynamic trailer in which to depict characters and events within the God of War mythology.

Creative director Karin Fong explains the idea behind the project: “Our goal was to translate the trailer’s story points into a visual language that felt both dimensional and fluid, as if one was looking through a resin prism to see the ever-changing scenes within it.”

To create the intricate spot, the Imaginary Forces team used Maya, RealFlow and After Effects. “The trickiest part of the process was developing a way to make the characters feel as though they were filled with a volume of ink rather than ink textures flowing over the surface of the geometry,” says 3D technical director Nate Homan. “Through some creative UV mapping we were able to create one seamless UV set for each character, allowing ink footage to flow from one piece of geometry to another without worrying about texture seams. We used this ink footage as a transparency map with a double-sided shader that allowed us to treat the front side and back side of the characters differently in comp.”
