Find out how artist Siamak Roshani created this compelling close-up portrait using ZBrush, Photoshop, Maya and mental ray…

When we first saw Siamak Roshani’s gorgeous CG render, Mafia Man, we were blown away by the level of detail. The ‘film-style’ close-up is really compelling and that’s why we chose Mafia Man as our current Facebook image.

Siamak Roshani on Mafia Man

“I’m currently a freelance 3D artist – I previously worked for five years as a 3D modeller/texture artist but recently I decided to quit my job and started to learn other 3D skills, such as lighting, shading, rendering and compositing. I’m always looking for opportunities in the film and game industry.

“For this image, I used ZBrush to sculpt, resurface, UV and texture paint the head, then fixed the textures and colour corrected them in Photoshop. I then used Maya to put the scene together and make small tweaks on the mesh and UVs, and mental ray for shading, lighting and rendering. Finally I used Photoshop to composite the render passes together and for colour correction.

“It’s hard to calculate how much time this project took as I was working on it in my free time. I would estimate around 20 days, about half of which was taken up with test renders.

Roshani created his own alpha maps for this project by hand!

“I couldn’t find a good base image to use as an alpha map so I decided to create alpha maps by hand in Photoshop; I polypainted the colour maps in ZBrush.

“Every texture on his face was painted in ZBrush and Photoshop, and I used Maya Fur on his clothing to create the small details (such as dust and hair).

“Every part of the project was enjoyable because each had its own challenges and I felt I was getting more involved in 3D than before. I was never bored!”
