Project showcase: McDonald’s “Kids’ Birthday Parties”

McDonald’s went to Bucharest’s Carioca Studio when it needed a set of little monsters for an ad campaign
McDonald’s in South Africa recently ran a campaign featuring monster children arriving at a birthday party, promoting the restaurant’s kids’ party services. Advertising agency DDB South Africa came up with the idea for monsters Tiffany, Theodore and Billy, and soon after approached Bucharest-based image concept house Carioca Studio with the brief.
Lead 3D artist Sofian Moumene explains: “Our team was responsible for delivering the final high-quality visuals for the agency, which involved everything from 3D work to photography and post-production work.” To create the intricate 3D work, 3ds Max was used to build and light the interiors and ZBrush for modelling the characters.
“ZBrush was the most useful tool on this project,” says Moumene. “The characters are the main part of the visuals and it really helped to build their personality and bring them to life. Achieving the expressions of the little monsters was the most challenging aspect of the project and ZBrush made it a lot easier for us.”
