UPDATED: Watch Tears of Steel here and now! With its short live-action film Tears of Steel, the Blender Foundation is back showing what VFX the open source software is capable of…

Tears of Steel, formerly known as Project Mango, is Blender Foundation’s fourth short film project.

You may remember other projects using Blender as we’ve featured them all in 3D World: Elephants Dream, Big Buck Bunny and Sintel.

These previous projects were CG animations, but Tears of Steel is The Blender Foundation’s first foray into live action.

The film has been produced with the sole purpose to improve and validate Blender’s open source 3D VFX pipeline.

UPDATED 27 Sept: The film itself, and all raw material used for making it, have been released under the Creatieve Commons 3.0 Attribution license. Visit the tearsofsteel.org website to find out more about this, or to purchase the 4-DVD box with a lot of extras.

In October, the film and all its assets will be released as Creative Commons Attribution.

It all looks very impressive and we can’t wait until we can see it. We hope to bring you more on this new Blender project soon. In the meantime enjoy:
