Piranha Bar mixed tactile design and 3D dynamics in the title sequence for this year’s ICAD Awards

The ICAD Awards this year are simply about ‘big heads’. That was the message the Institute of Creative Advertising and Design (ICAD) gave to creative content studio Piranha Bar when it approached it to create the event’s title sequence. “We took the opportunity to mix some tactile design with some awesome 3D dynamics and a bit of architecture for good measure,” explains director and designer Shane Griffin.

The Piranha team created the visuals for the spot in-house, from concept through to final delivery, using Softimage, V-Ray and a selection of third-party plug-ins. “Exocortex’s Momentum was paramount in this project,” says Griffin. “Its integration, user-friendly interface and playback speed is unparalleled in any other program. It helped us create accurate soft bodies when inflating the balloon, accurate dynamic interactions between the inflated balloons and great realism from our ragdoll bodies.”

There are 16 dynamic ragdolls in the scene, all moving at once. They were rigged with open-source rigging system Gear in Softimage. “Momentum really surprised us with its stability and speed,” says Griffin. “If you own a copy of Softimage, you need to invest in Momentum. Effects that were virtually impossible before within Softimage are now easily achievable.”
