The Maxwell Render Challenge run by Ronen Bekerman on his architectural visualisation blog draws to an end, and the winning entries are stunning!

The results of Ronen Bekerman’s recent Maxwell Render Challenge are in! Answering the call for artists to showcase the New National Gallery and its surroundings during an event of their choice, many people submitted entries and the competition was stiff.

Cream of the crop

Stefan Hirschsteiner scoops the top prize with his butterflies images. Although the judges remarked that Stefan was a bit weaker on the detail and that he had misjudged the depth of field, they agreed that his work encapsulated and illustrated perfectly what modernistic buildings are meant to be – a clean slate filled with life. He also showed great composition, textures and colour grading.

Concept and execution

The first runner-up prize went to Bertrand Benoit who is known for his amazing level of detail. The judges loved the texture work on the staircase in the first image and the technical perfection of Bertrand’s work. The judges marked his entries down on the lack of people in the final images.

The second runner up, Jamie Holmes, picked an unusual but very exciting idea for an exhibit. His dedication in getting the modeling, texturing, materials and lights just right was noted by the judges although they thought that the ‘track’ in the second image overshadowed the architecture in the end, rather than showcasing it.

All the entries were judged according to accepted standards of architectural visualisation, including and in no particular order: composition, 3D modelling, lighting, materials and textures, concept (original approach), addressing the unique design of the Neue Nationalgalerie, technical skill, emotive value and participation in WIP threads.
