Default Mar / Apr 2011 Challenge - Creature Creations

Creature Creations Mar / Apr challenge:

The challenge is to model a creature - we don't mind what it is, biped, quadruped, whatever - and make it as you would a base model ready to be subdivided and detailed in ZBrush. That way, if you win, you can use it in ZBrush right away!

The winner will be the person who builds the nicest creature in terms of design, stance and pose. Remember, this isn't the finished object, but should be detailed enough that it's ready to have the final high-res details added. (We're assuming you don't have ZBrush already.)

We're looking for a nice greyscale/ambient occlusion render, but feel free to light it and add texture if it helps to add mood. We will also expect to see a wireframe of your creation.

Don't panic too much about topology!

Look to a top limit of some where around 9000 Polygons for your creature

Progress

You can start now,

It'll be cool to see progress / discussions in this thread

Final Date

To be confirmed by the 3DW staff, but I would guess it'll be around Apr 18th.

Note

I'm adding this thread as it was requested in the CC - Not a walk cycle thread. This should give clear direction and our standard format, and I didn't set the challenge this time I may even enter myself .

Just a request for clarification from 3dw staff - are we talking fantasy creatures here (my assumption) or are real creatures allowed?

I'd prefer to see something fantastical - so it's test of your creative, imaginative and technical powers. Don't sweat polygon count too much; we're looking for an interesting creature (warrior/ monster/demon/alien/whatever) with props and clothes/armour/weapons or whatever.

Now less typing and more modelling. You've got two months to do it in so plenty of time! If you need some inspiration, check out 3Dtotal.com and, of course, pixologic.com.

And, again, a big Thank You to Pixologic for supplying the ZBrush prize!

Default Great an official thread!

Good to see an official thread, it will help smooth some things over.

I'm enjoying the creative process with this. My creature at this point is too bare and not interesting enough. So I'll brain storm for a few days, try to develop it a little more to break up the generic feel and make it more original. As well as settle on composition, then I'll post the concepts to show progress.

Looking forward to seeing stuff from everyone else too.

I would imagine it would be in your favour to go original as there might be a lack of imagination and creativity in something which was concepted by a studio. However there is nothing wrong with being inspired.

I am thinking of taking a concept based on the Harulth described by Raymond E Feist in the magician books(I think in Silverthorn), six legged giant lizard, but rather then brute force and ignorance as described by Feist I want to see how a high tech evolved one might look. (Might end up a little bit like early w40k tyranids were drawn (thinking rule book version 1).

So I'm going for a creature that is a little inspired, but mainly mine.

Default Gorilla Sapiens

so this is my initial concept and by no means my last. Its an evolved gorilla.

this is the first complete body i've modelled to date, and I'm actually quite pleased with it.

No pose or clothing / accessories yet but I think I nailed the face, even if it is low poly.

sub 9000 tris

interesting gorilla fact the western lowland gorilla's latin name is Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla
