Maya offers flexible and robust tools that make it possible to find more than just one solution to achieve a desirable look. You can utilise several of Maya’s deformers and other innovative features to simulate musculature while cutting down significantly on processing power.

You can build your own volume-preservation systems, like pose-space deformers that cause certain operations to be carried out when your creatures are posed in a particular way. A basic example of this would be to have a character’s biceps bulge as its elbows bend. Blend shapes are an incredibly useful and powerful feature in a 3D artist’s toolset. While they are primarily used in the creation of facial shapes for character animation, they can also be used to add a bit more life and fluidity to normally inanimate objects. With a little time, they can be employed to create more complex effects such as splashes and ripples in a pond, flames and even animated cloth.

In this tutorial, we look at what blend shapes are and how they work, as well as looking at any considerations you have to be aware of when creating them within a production environment. We also look at combining blend shapes with Maya’s Set Driven Key features to create a more efficient workflow, and reveal how to use the more advanced blend shape features to create a more complex flame effect.
