UK band to play first ever live stereoscopic 3D gig

Following Radiohead‘s decision to make a music video entirely using LIDAR data, British ‘piano rock‘ band Keane have elected to broadcast a live gig entirely in anaglyphic 3D. More details below.

Anyone with an interest in stereoscopic 3D may also wish to check out our own upcoming issue 116, on sale 1 April, which includes an article on setting up a stereo pipeline, and how to ovecome the constraints that stereoscopic 3D imposes on visual effects work.

Keane are also namechecked in Mitch Benn and the Distractions‘ elegantly satirical ‘Everything sounds like Coldplay now‘, which readers of discernment should check out here.

PRESS RELEASE

3D production company Nineteen Fifteen is working with Inition, the 3D technology specialist, to produce the world’s first ever live 3D gig for multi-million selling band Keane. The transmission will take place on Thursday April 2 at 8pm and will feature Keane playing a short set from the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.

The anaglyph webcast will be shown on Keanemusic.com where fans can order 3D glasses. The glasses will also be available with the seven-inch single version of the band‘s forthcoming single, ‘Better Than This‘, out March 16. The production is being run as a full multi-camera HD shoot.

Working with Nineteen Fifteen and the director, David Barnard, Inition is overseeing the 3D technical architecture of the project from planning, production and technology through to broadcast.

Vicki Betihavas of Nineteen Fifteen says ”Producing a 3D shoot has its challenges; however going live takes it to another level. Crucial for the success of the project has been to manage the the technical requirements, whilst ensuring the creative integrity of the event is maintained and the director is supported in his vision of what needs to be delivered. Hence why we felt Inition were best placed for the 3D elements as they have a wealth of unrivalled experience. For the live broadcast we engaged Telegenic OB‘s, who embraced the 3D elements whilst ensuring the multi camera engineering was in place.”

Andy Millns, Director of Inition commented: “We are delighted to be on board with Nineteen Fifteen to facilitate the first ever live 3D music transmission. Working with 3D in a broadcast environment can be complex and technically challenging. We will be using bespoke 3D kit for the shoot including Sensio and the StereoBrain Processor which enables live 3D manipulation and monitoring – essential in a live broadcast situation.”

The audio from the gig will also be simultaneously broadcast live on-air on newly launched national station Absolute Radio and in its full 3D video glory at www.absoluteradio.co.uk.
