Escape Studios launches new Games course

New classroom-based course covers creation of realistic models and environments for games using Maya, Photoshop, ZBrush, CrazyBump and the Unreal engine

Simon Fenton, former lead artist at Sony Computer Entertainment London will teach the course

PRESS RELEASE

LONDON | March 16, 2009 | Learn how to create artwork required to land a job in the games industry with Escape‘s new classroom-based Games Course. Taught by Simon Fenton, former lead artist at Sony Computer Entertainment London, Escape‘s games course will teach students how to take art direction and create realistic models and environments for games. Using leading technology such as Maya, Photoshop, ZBrush, CrazyBump and the renowned Unreal engine, this comprehensive 12 week course will equip students with the necessary skills, and a demo reel, for pursuing a job in game development.

The course kicks off March 30 and will be offered fulltime, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Escape‘s London headquarters. To register or obtain more information, including a detailed course outline, visit this link.

“Escape‘s goal is to focus on teaching the skills our students need to be successful in real production environments,“ says Simon Fenton, the course instructor. “Junior games artists don‘t write code or design levels, which is why we focus on teaching students on how to model, texture and light according to a brief. We also give them a sound grounding in artistic principle and an understanding of the technical limitations a games artist has to work under on a daily basis.“

Escape‘s Games Course will provide in-depth coverage of the following concepts over a 12 week period: Introduction to the User Interface; Animation Basics; Nurbs Modeling; Polygon Modeling and UVs; Introduction to Texture Mapping; Introduction to Lighting and Rendering; Introduction to Video Games; Exteriors and Lighting; Asset Generation; Enclosed Interiors and Advanced Lighting and Organic Modeling with Zbrush. The final week, titled ‘Project Week,‘ allows students to finalize their work and put together a customized demo reel.

“This is the perfect course for students interested in learning the fundamental skills required to pursue and secure a job in the games industry,“ said Paul Wilkes, recruitment director of Escape. “Not only does Escape‘s Games Course cover every aspect of creating models and environments for games, it also help students compile their work onto a demo reel, and our recruitment team helps them tailor that reel for specific job applications.”

Pricing and Availability
Escape‘s Games Course is fulltime and runs from March 30, 2009 through Sept. 28, 2009. The comprehensive 12 week course takes place Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. GMT and is priced at 8,500 GBP. No prior knowledge of Maya, Photoshop, ZBrush, Unreal or CrazyBump is necessary; however, a basic knowledge of 3D and some familiarity with Photoshop is recommended. PhaseSpace demonstrates hybrid mo-cap system at GDC

PhaseSpace demonstrates technology that enables artists to use "Magic Windows" to see the virtual world

PRESS RELEASE

San Leandro, Calif. | March 18, 2009 – PhaseSpace, the price/performance leader in optical motion capture systems, will be demonstrating a virtual camera at this year‘s Game Developer‘s Conference in San Francisco. The wireless “Magic Window” allows directors and artists to see the virtual world using a hybrid PhaseSpace motion capture system and Autodesk Motion Builder. For architectural walkthroughs, video game simulations, and movie previsualization, the “Magic Window” allows real time viewing of characters, sets and action. More than one “Magic Window” can be operated at a time for multiple views.

PhaseSpace will also feature a series of video game production simulations. The simulations are meant to demonstrate different video game genres done in real-time with minimal data cleanup. Some of the simulations will include first-person shooter, sports, and fitness games. PhaseSpace will also be offering free sample data and allow certain individuals to direct the motions they wish to use.

The Game Developer‘s Conference will take place from March 23rd to March 27th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The exhibit dates will be from March 25th to March 27th with the previous days being summits and tutorials.

The PhaseSpace motion capture system uses active LED markers which modulate, producing a unique ID for each marker. At 3 times the speed and 3 times the resolution of other systems, the Impulse system displays motion data in real time through Motion Master and AutoDesk Motion Builder. The Impulse Systems are in use with Bethesda Softworks, Brainzoo, Eden Games, 3G Studios, Zombie, the US Armed Forces and major research institutions around the country.

About PhaseSpace

PhaseSpace Inc. was founded in 1994 with the mission of developing new technologies and products for emerging motion tracking markets. Drawing upon the talents of a strong team of scientists and engineers from diverse technical backgrounds, PhaseSpace has developed motion capture solutions for the research, industrial and graphic arts communities.

PhaseSpace is the first to introduce a product that breaks the cost barrier with affordable hardware and affordable applications. The PhaseSpace Impulse System was developed as a new generation of 3D optical motion capture systems designed to be affordable to small companies, universities and individuals, lowering the cost of ownership so that it would be a financially feasible tool for a single artist or researcher.

The PhaseSpace system utilizes custom optics and camera technology that leverages Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and synthesized digital signal processor (DSP) technology to deliver real time functionality at a new price threshold.
